How long have you been a doula?
I began working as a doula after I completed the course in the Fall of 2002.

Why did you decide to become a doula?
The idea to help another woman and her partner during labour came to me the moment I visited my sister-in -law in her labour. They had hired a doula, a role I was not familiar with. After witnessing the benefits of a doula, I was not only fascinated by it but knew it was something I needed to do.

What training have you had? Have you completed any other birth-related courses?
I completed a 2-day doula-training workshop in 2002 in Calgary and then began volunteering my services in a local hospital for several months in Ontario. Through this, I was able to participate in many births and witnessed the different options of intervention available and their successes. I am certified through DONA (Doulas of North America) and I have my level one Reiki. I am also a Lamaze Trained Childbirth Educator.

What are your hobbies, passions, diversions, etc.?
My passions undoubtedly are my family and the love we share as well as the honesty in the close relationships I keep with my friends. My hobbies and diversions tend to change from season to season however I enjoy running, skiing, "coffee chats" with others and reading.

What is your philosophy about birth?
My birth philosophy is that no two births are the same and should not be treated as so. I help develop self-confidence, trust and faith in the woman and her partner to aid in the ability to give birth. I want to create a safe and secure environment for a woman in labour and enable her to express all birth-related feelings. Privacy and emotional security is expected and protected.

A little something about your personal life...
I am married to a wonderful man, Austin. I have 2 beautiful teenage children, Greg and Jill and 2 loving step-daughters, Robin and Kelly. I recently have moved to Calgary from Ontario, prompted by the desire to live in a more relaxed atmosphere.

What are your specialties, unique qualities, whatever....what might make someone want to hire you specifically?
I offer to you a holistic approach to managing labour through physical and emotional support, while keeping an open mind to the need of pain medication. This is carried out through comfort measures that aid in creating a memorable birth experience. I look forward to developing a relationship of trust with you.
